English verge fusee made in 1767 by watchmaker John Edmonds. The movement has a very beautiful plate, pierced parts and balance assembly. The balance has great movement and sound when running. The inner case is gold gilt over sterling silver, and is hallmarked for 1767. (This watch was made twenty two years before George Washington became president of the U.S. on Feb. 4, 1789). The outer case is covered in shagreen which is in great condition considering it is age. In the 17th and early 18th centuries, the term "shagreen" began to be applied to leather made from sharkskin or the skin of a ray fish. I have a very nice gold key to set and wind this watch.
It's fascinating to hold this tiny machine in your hands that was the highest technology 250 years ago!
Thank you very much for looking!
Wonderful original beetle and poker blued steel hands on this one!
All that hand work...Amazing!!
To see a picture of the movement enlarged takes away from the fact of how delicate it really is. No electricity for machinery or lighting. All done by hand by a window or candle light truly is amazing. Thanks for commenting.
Jones and Horan in NH is good for these sorts of things too. I used to collect/trade 17-18th century verge fusee PWs. I often bemoan divesting my collection about 10 years ago. Email me, I'll send you pics of what I had.
Ken, such a lovely "Fusee". Had to bring it back to the top
Very beautiful
Beautiful inside and out... I agree, pops52. The work, for the day, is amazing! The pillars are awesome.
