For some reason there are some things that I have never got round to posting on CW. They have been kept back because they really are favourite items. Describing them and sharing them is hard. This is one such item.
I have two pieces by MILAN METELÁK for HARRACHOV as part of the HARRTIL RANGE . This one I've had for twenty years!

It's Harrach from around 1955. The range of wares is called "Harrtil" and was designed by Milan Metelák and Milos Pulpitel. This one I use daily for a tomato or other single pieces of fruit. It looks like the fruit is being trapped in a net, scooped out of the water. It's a great and cheap way of adding colour to the room.

“In 1955 the Harrachov factory in Bohemia in Czechoslovakia launched a range of art glass called Harrtil. It was developed by designer Milan Metelák and factory manager Milos Pulpitel. The fine white mesh of woven glass fibres (known as "merletto" - net - in Italian) trapped within heavy glass casing can be seen in all the pieces in the series.” (modernistglass.com)

Metelák Milan (1928 - 1993) was a significant glass artist and also a talented painter, the elder son of Alois Metelák, the first director Zelezny Glass School.

“Glasshound” explains:: These Harrtil pieces are often mistaken for the true “merletto” pieces of Archimede Seguso. “Merletto” is a network of lattimo (opaque white glass) threads. The mesh on the Seguso pieces are in fact an illusion created by joining two blown bubbles with filigree lines, thus creating a net-like effect. The Harrtil pieces, on the other hand, are made with a net of woven glass."

    Height 9 cm / 3.5 inches
    Diameter 22 cm / 8.7 inches

Many thanks JayHow. This is not controlled bubbles. This is a mesh of woven glass fibres that is set into the glass. Controlled bubbles are industrially done by using spikes that the glass is rolled over. The spikes were nails hammered through a wooden base, I think.
In Murano Seguso used a different technique to this glass mesh technique to achieve his 'merletto' pieces which are much more technically difficult and desirable. I still don't have one. On the wish list. The result is quite different and more random than the regularity of these Harrtil pieces. Google 'Seguso merletto' and you'll see the difference.

The net appears to be beeing hauled out of the water, Hence the waves at the base . Love it immensely !
