Hmmm...still not sure but will continue to explore....
Figured it out! The mark is: E.G. Webster. They were a company formed in Brooklyn New York in 1859. This mark was used between 1886-1928. So this was either my great grandfather's or my grandfather's....
:-) I'm going to get my magnifier to see if I can read the maker's mark more accurately.

Hi BHock45, Thanks for your comments - a cigar box wouldn't surprise me - my great grandfather was a cigar maker and he came over from England! I'll check out that mark more closely.
