your trunk is a fine example of a canvas flat top trunk -- this style of trunk is also known as square top or box top trunks -- most were popular from the 1890s to the early 1920s -- the better ones -- such as yours -- have an iron bottom, and the top around the edges of the lid reinforced with cast iron fingers along with the fancy brass lock mechanism -- your's probably has the embossed taylor trade mark on the lock and perhaps even the patent number-- although too small to see in the photos -- your slats are made of hardwood oak -- taylor was a maker of high quality heavy duty trunks -- again as seen in the cast iron fingers, brass lock and cast iron latches on your trunk -- manf sites for taylor and website as follows:

      taylor, ca trunk works
      39 east randolph street
      chicago, ill

      and

      657 west madison
      new york, ny

      and

      131 west 38th street
      new york, ny

would guess this trunk's circa around 1890s -- very very nice trunk with great quality and style
