I was so excited by this great find at the flea market today, I decided it would be my first post on Collector's Weekly.
A large sized salt glazed jug. It is marked with a 2, but seems much larger than my other 2 gallon crocks. It also seems very heavily/thickly formed - weighs a good 7 - 8 pounds.
The seller had no information on the piece, not even where it came from because they said it was from another seller's booth that they had integrated for the show. It appeared neither they nor the original seller were aware of what they had, since I have paid more for small, unmarked crocks than I paid for this hefty jug.
Unfortunately, after much review, it does not appear to have any impress marks from the maker, and based on the uniform shape overall at at the lip, I have a feeling it's a later piece. I'm not as versed in handle attachment as I should be, so I've included closeups of that if it might give a clue to its age. Regardless, it looks great with the rest of my collection. One of my best finds at the flea market ever.
Thanks for the "love"
somebody, somewhere has got to recognize that swan-like number 2! it's really unique and beautiful. have you poured two gallons of water into it to see if that's what it holds? otherwise, it may be for 2 litres, maybe? what does the bottom look like?
