This is an early porcelein advertising sign for Hershey's chocolate tablets. It is 12 1/8 X 6 3/8. I have been looking for quite some time but can't find any information about it. Any info. or value help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure this is a fake sign

I can tell cause it says "Licenced by the hershey foods corperation" plus there's a "TM" by "Hershey's". Those are the classic signs of a repro. A more modern repro if I might add.

Where do I find info regarding trademarks being associated with reproductions. If its a recent reproduction someone did a great job faking the rust on front and back. Thanks.

Hershey itself wasnt trademarked till 1906
    8. Vestaswind Vestaswind, 14 years ago
Hmm. Looks like the rust is not only done well, but almost the same in other reporductions.

      I was the buyer there.

Hmm well I'm not sure what you want to do about that then. As a seller he should of said reproduction. Saying it's "olde" he might be right, it's a retired Andy Rooney sign. It could be as old as the 70's? If you bought it and was under the impression it was original you might want to have a talk with that seller.

I think you can contact the people on that site to ask them for a second opinion.
    12. dellwebb, 14 years ago
Thanks I'll ask them. The wording is different at the bottom of the Ande Rooney sign. I would be surprised if they made different variations of the same repro sign.

This is the thing with me, and I'm no expert but I'm sure those that collect signs will know. I would think if it was original it wouldn't be flat tin but porcelain? It's worth looking into. On the bright side, some of the repo's are collectable to. How much they go for I have no idea.
    14. dellwebb, 14 years ago
It's porcelain paint on thick gage steel
    15. Vestaswind Vestaswind, 14 years ago
I hope it's real for your sake of course, and could be. I would check to be sure, you are protected on eBay if it's not and have 30 days to file a claim?
    16. Vestaswind Vestaswind, 14 years ago
Oh and by the way if it's real you got a bargain.
    17. dellwebb, 14 years ago
For $40 its no big deal. I am curious to find out for sure though. Do you know of any online sites where experts can be of assistance?
    18. Savoychina1 Savoychina1, 14 years ago
I took the liberty of asking the person you bought it from. Here is their response. "its real, reproductions are made of tin-lightweight, this is made of very heavy metal, with gray primer back, was hanging up in a barnsale on wall, its nice! good piece for the buyer, john
    19. Vestaswind Vestaswind, 14 years ago
I'll tell you what dell got a deal then!

They made reproduction porcelain signs too, and not just ande rooney. And they didn't use "TM" on brands until the 60's or 70's. I'm telling you, it's a repro. if it is real, it's not from which the sign may show.

I'd say your sign is a repop. In North Carolina they are reproducing and flooding the market. It's called greed, they don't care it's all about the money. They can make anythink look old.

I have been searching about the trademarks or lack thereof on older signs. Where can I find this info.? Thanks.

Hersey adopted the name "Hershey Foods Corporation" in 1968. So it's no earlier than that.
