Well the thrift gods were good to me this week! I do not know where they have been for the last month. Apparently all I had to do is sacrifice my basement to the flood and voila! I happened to quick stop a thrift that is not part of my regular route. A Lalique water nymph trinket dish for two dollars!! Needless to say I did my patented dive for the shelf!
    Whoop! Whoop!

I'd also like to take a moment to thank everyone for their well wishes, and offers of assistance. What a great community we have here at CW!

God bless, AmberRose!!! Some others don't know how you were working on resolving the damage caused by your neighbors' flooded basements. You probably don't even know how many persons you helped - you just helped until there were no longer any flooded basements anywhere near you! That is the way you live and give, and I'm so pleased that this gorgeous Lalique treasure ran forward to bless you. Bless you!!! : D

Phil, water nymph for water in the basement? Water karma? I have thought about it.
Mikko, you make me blush. I had the skill set to help, and so I did. It is what you are suppose to do!

Indeed, you have a remarkable range of skills sets, and your Engineering qualifcations made you an ideal candidate, but you did this on a volunteer basis, and you did it for everyone! Husband detained out of town, with family to look after, as well. And a job. There's nothing 'obvious' about your service. It was extraordinary and exquiste!!! How about Senator AmberRose? : )

You're most welcome re the package - my pleasure!!! And I thank you heartily for your most generous soon-to-arrive gift!!! Take care. : D

If anyone's interested the signature dates it roughly to 1960-1976 -so although not classic period (ie pre 1945) still a nice bit of age!

Manddmoir, thanks for the dating, it's what I was guessing as well. Appreciate the info, always good!

Hi, all. This is the Naïade Cendrier (Water Nymph Ashtray). I have a question for manddmoir, please. I can't see the object very well in these photos. Could you please speak to why this item has a less 'discrete' clarity than the late issue of this cendrier. This is an original Rene Lalique design, and the original was made with the old - 'softer' - glass formula, wasn't it? If your dating is correct, manddmoir, I should expect to see more 'discretion' - an extremely "crisp" imagin, with the bubbles defined almost as if the were perfectly round and uniform 'hard' pearls. I don't see any glass bubble faults, such that would indicate the earlier glass formula, but it doesn't seem to have the crisp, extremely discrete form that I am accustomed to seeing in the later cendrier produced using Marc Lalique's 'harder' glass formula. My primary knowledge of Lalique is Rene Lalique's original flacons, and I know that you have considerable Lalique expertise, so I will leave these questions in your hands, sir, if I may. Thank you.

      Hi

The dating is based solely on the signature - earlier and the signature would be thicker -softer -later it would include a 'r' in a circle meaning registered trade mark. -it all in the books

This period the glass would be 12% i.e. full lead crystal (as they used now - I think- but twice the lead content of the 1930s).

Mould definition is a much more complex issue.

All the R Lalique original design moulds were made by Frankhauser to achieve the best definition with 6% lead. When Marc introduced 12% lead the definition was generally worse -many moulds were unworkable other pieces had less definition.

But over time the moulds were replaced - it is likely a mould would work for only a few days use (a day's use maybe 1000s of production depending on demand)

I believe when a piece was in high demand -like this one - there would be many new moulds over time -the first days of use would be more crisp, later would be balder. Less popular pieces suffered poor moulds for many years -

In the pictures above I see lots of small bubbles -well defined but no tiny bubbles -I'm only guessing but I think this is a mould adapted for 12% lead. I've seen similar dated examples with almost no bubbles.

Hope this helps happy to answer more questions

      Mike

Thank you very much, manddmoir, for your very generous and gracious response! I queried you because I know that you have significant expertise in Lalique, and I was puzzled by this piece, and hoped to learn from you here. I do not own "R. Lalique Catalogue Raisonne De L'Oeuvre De Verre" by Felix Marcilhac, 2011, nor is it available in a library close to me. Since you posted your fine response four days ago, I have been looking at a lot of signatures, and I know that this piece was issued 'prior to the 1978' insertion of the Trademark 'R' symbol, but I cannot on my knowledge suggest a possible date range of 1960 - 1976. Could you please provide a book reference for the most recent treatment of this signature? Or, a book reference for the treatment of this signature that is in your opinion the most precise and correct? I have myself come up short on dating an early Rene Lalique flacon when I cited one authority whose work had, unbeknownst to me, since been surpassed and 'refuted'.

I enjoyed reading your assessment of mold wear factor! I continue to be struck by the lack of detail in the nymph's form - breast detail quite 'obscured' (which 'obscuring' I prefer to the original), face somewhat obscured, hand detail obscured, less assertive 'bubbles'.

Thank you very much, sir! : )

Oh, my. I lost my brain somewhere. If anyone finds it, please let me know. It's small and run-down! Marchilhac? No. My apologies.

Hi - you are more than welcome
For most of the Lalique range there are two main signatures between 1945 and 1976/7 (before the added r in a circle) - both are script. Both usually say Lalique France. The early one (I think up to 1960ish) looks like its written with a thick lead pencil. The later one; looks like a thinner pencil (in reality probably done by a diamond point). I think most good books on Lalique will cover this. -there are also a number of other signatures over this period but I've not managed to work out their periods of use (eg Crystal Lalique)
