I've been collecting these for years and thought they would look nice displayed all together. It seems like everywhere you look they tear down the old barns and put up the new pole barns and don't bother replacing the lightning rods, balls and weathervanes. Some people come over to the house and have never seen anything like this before. As of November 30, 2011 I've posted three new pictures because of some more new items added to the collection. There are 60 balls, 18 weathervanes, two white teardrop pendants and fourteen rods. There is also a directional weathervane (north, south, east, west) out of the 1800's and an acorn topper also from the 1800's. There are several weathervanes from that time period too. Some of the balls and weathervanes your looking at are rare and hard to find. Some colors are more desirable than others, just as some of the balls are more desirable to the collector than others. Hope you enjoy this collection as much as I do.

I USED TO SHOOT AT THESE WITH MY BB GUN. LOL.
Thank you MooreAntique, No telling how many hundreds and hundreds were shot out with bb-guns and rifles.
I have never seen anything like them before. I wonder if it's a regional thing? I don't recall ever seeing any here in the deep south.... not even out in the country where my husband is from. They are really pretty!
Thank you tikiray for your comment, glad you like.
Ya I don't recall seeing'em eather good thing too I probably would of taken a few out w/ my BB gun aswell. They probably were all around me thou I grewup in the middle of a bunch of farms. The regional thing is interesting, there ya go MJ something else to research!

Thank you ThriftyGypsy!
Great collection o.f.. I think the person who said these are a regional item was correct. Our farm had several very old barns, but nothing like these beauties on it! Just a copper rod with a heavy copper cable to the ground, although maybe some-one had already shot them out! Great collection!

You are a diversified collector officialfuel. I'm sorry I missed this one. I was just waiting to commemt on the updated version...lol. Very nice assortment of these lightening rods. The colors and shapes are truely amazing. I'm curious to learn why some of the rods have more globes than others. Did this have something to do with greater lightening protection? Your feedback is appreciated. Two thumbs up!!...and back to the front page. Don't miss this one Collector Weekly friends.
There is a farm house with a couple of barns I pass frequently while doing deliveries that has 10(yes I counted them) lightening rods total. They all have matching light blue balls on them.Pretty cool ! You're collection is very impressive official(as always) !!!
Thank you MMM for stopping by and showing some love on the collection! If your out and look on top of the barns or older houses they would only have one ball or globe on the rod, it was for decoration only. There is a copper wire that is attached to the rod and it runs down the side of the building and is attached to a steel rod in the ground. That way if lighting strikes it is grounded. I have stack several globes or balls on top of each other just to show off the different sizes and shapes and colors. The rods and stands are different lengths and sizes, thats why some rods have more or less on them than others. There are also weathervanes on the rods. Just trying to save some history from being destroyed or thrown away. Hope I have answered your question and again thanks for the love and the awesome compliment!
