IMAGES NOT TO BE REPRODUCED FOR ANY REASON.
Four pensive, maybe even sad, ladies wearing hats. All are cabinet cards.
    1) Sad eyes and a small topper with a feather. Piercing eyes. No ID. Done by Warren's Portraits in Boston.
    2) Dark haired lady in a small boater or derby with a feather. More resolute but still somehow sad. Dark eyes. No ID. Done by Erickson in Lynn, NY in 1884 (dated on stamp).
    3) Lady looking bored and studious. Has a slightly wider brim hat with a feather. No ID. A lovely backstamp by the photographers Ritz and Hastings of Boston, which notes that even though the studio is located one floor up at the address, it is connected by an elevator. Ritzy digs for that time!
    4) Sad looking lady dressed in black (or a very dark color) and a matching tilt hat with a white feather. The body language indicates that she would rather be elsewhere. The dark colors, if black, indicate mourning - perhaps the reason for the sad countenance? No ID on the lady. Photo by Stiffler of Langmont, Colorado with a lovely backstamp embellished with flowers and butterflies.

I think you nailed the last one, she doesn't want that picture taken.
The other three don't seem sad to me, just serious.
They're actually doing cartwheels on the inside! :-)

Perhaps you are correct walksoftly.....it is hard to keep a smile on the face without moving for the amount of time required to expose the negative in those times. But they are still pensive at the very least! Thanks for the comments and appreciation, and thanks also to b'buss, vetraio, mustangtony and Moonstonelover.
