This came from an estate in Los Angeles this week. The gentleman was John Basmajian (http://john-basmajian.com/basmajian/biography/la/) who was a free lance designer and artist for Oil Companies in the 20's and 30's and then Disney in the '40's. This double sided wooden hand painted pegasus was used as flooring on the top of the garage until last week. Any info on the dating of this would be much appreciated as he also freelanced in the '40s for mobil oil, shell and A Richfield. Measurements are 57" tall by 62" long by 1/2" wide.

    Thanks so much,

    Pearse

Little know fact outside of Dallas, most people believe this is Pegasus, the flying horse of mythology. Actually it is Mobilus the symbol of Mobile Oil Company after it bought out Magnolia Petroleum. Mobilus is perched high upon the Magnolia building (now a hotel) in downtown Dallas, TX and has become the official logo for the city of Dallas.

I believe Vacuum oil co. (Gargoyle logo)merged with Socony oil in about 1928,to Create the Socony-Vacuum Oil Co.(later Mobil(no e)),and between 1928--1936 started fasing out the Gargoyle and replacing it with the Pegasus. They used it solely until 1966,so by that it would date this early to 30's to mid 60's,but I ---(my opinion) ---do believe this is most likely 30's -40's.
      Here is my 1954 Pegasus-

Learned that the Flying Red Horse on the oil company building in Dallas, Texas will be lit after being dark for many years.
