I HAD POSTED THIS AS A CAST IRON AND IT IN FACT IS NOT CAST IRON IT IS MADE OF BRONZE I GUESS BECAUSE A MAGNET DOES NOT STICK TO IT ,IT IS DATED 1913 AND HAS A POEM AT THE BOTTOM OF IT .
{the shadow by my finger cast divides the future from the past one hour alone is in thy hands
the now on which the shadow stands before it sleeps the unborn hour in darkness and beyond thy power behind its unrelenting line the vanished hour no longer thine }
IT HAS THREE INDIAN HEAD BUST ON ONE SIDE OF THE DIAL AND WHAT LOOKS LIKE A PRESIDENT BUST ON THE OTHER AND IF IT WAS THE PRESIDENT OF 1913 THAT WOULD BE WOODROW WILSON ,IF ANYONE HAS EVER SEEN ONE SOME WHER3E PLEASE LET ME KNOW , I AM THINKING THIS MIGHT OF BE MADE SPECIAL FOR SOME REASON, THANKS FOR ANY HELP ON THIS LOUIS W.

I think she is refering to the remarks right under the poem on this link:
sundial maker James Stewart, a whitesmith who worked in Invercargill, New Zealand and made more than 200 sundials before his death in 1933. (James Stewart was the great grandfather of Bruce Christie, Palmerston North, New Zealand. (bruce @greenplant.co.nz) who kindly supplied this collection.
Dave
OK THANKS GUYS, YOU HAVE REALLY WENT THE EXTRA MILE FOR ME HERE ,REALLY AM THANKFUL ,THIS IS THE BEST SITE I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF BEING APART OF , JUST WISH I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS LONG AGO ,JUST IN THE LAST WEEK I HAVE GOTTEN MORE ANSWERS TO THINGS AND THIS IS WHAT COLLECTING IS ALL ABOUT PEOPLE HELPING EACH OTHER . THANKS SO MUCH LOUIS W.
LET ME ASK ONE MORE THING IN YALL'S THINKING WOULD YOU SAY THIS WOULD BE A RARE PIECE OR A COMMON PIECE FOR COLLECTING OF SUN DIALS ,I AM JUST ASKING ,JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT IT OK ,TIA LOUIS W.
The poem is quite famous so it may have been copied many times. It's "rareness" may have to do with the symbols on the dial. Clean them as best you can an take more pictures. Did this come from somewhere nearby? Check with your library or local museum. Lokks like a really cool piece, though,. Good luck.
WELL AS FAR AS CLEANING I WAS NOT SURE WHAT TO DO TO IT ,IT LOOKS LIKE IT HAS ALL ORIGINAL FINISH ,WHICH LOOKS LIKE A BLACK SEALER OF SOME KIND, AND DID YOU SEE WHERE I SAID THIS WAS NOT CAST IRON BUT SOME TYPE OF A BRONZE I THINK BECAUSE A MAGNET WOULD NOT STICK TO IT .AND THERE IS SOME OTHER LETTER ON IN IT A COUPLE PLACES BUT CAN NOT MAKE OUT FROM TIME OF WEATHERING THE ELEMENTS OF TIME ALMOST 100 YEARS WORTH, THANKS AGAIN
YES I BOUGHT THIS A LOCAL AUCTION WHERE I LIVE MIDDLE TN, AS FAR AS WHERE THEY GOT IT THERE WAS NO ONE WHO KNEW ANYTHING ON IT , I THINK THE TIME 1913 IS THE TIME PERIOD IT WAS MADE THOUGH.AND THAT ABOUT ALL I KNOW NOW, WILL KEEP PLUGING AWAY AT FOR A WHILE AND SEE WHAT I COME UP WITH, THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HAD ANY INPUT LOUIS W.
Got some kin over around Dickson, tell 'em howdy!
Wash it down with a damp cloth and mild soup to get the dirt of, then dry it good. Don't polish off patina. Dave

QUOTE FROM BRUCE CHRISTIE GREAT GRANDSON OF THE DIAL MAKE JAMES STEWART AS FOLLOWS, Hi Lewis,
You almost certainly have a sundial made by my great grandfather. While it is just a guess I expect it was obtained by somebody that came to the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in 1925. Any chance of getting some digital pictures and your location or wherever the sundial is located? Thanks for making contact.
Look forward to hearing from you again
Bruce
THANKS EVERYONE FOR HELPING ME PUT ALL THE PIECES TOGETHER
