My husband believes the item is a beaver trap.
Thank you so much for your assistance and you love the screen. Will try your suggestion. Thanking SEAN68 and aghcollect too. My husband and I have enjoyed the screen since the early 80's.
The panels do folder together and are not separate. My husband said, the backing is continuous and acts as a fabric hinge.
