There was many memorable things I remembered , but most of all, SUNDAY! SUNDAY! the day we went to view the contents of the Push Carts that lined Avenue C for 4 or 5 blocks, old household items, chakies (nicknaks), old tools, clothing, produce and European antiques; I wish I had the savy then. The family owed stores, were incredible, Walter's Appetizing Store, deli's today, sold white fish, Belly Lox, pickles in a barrel, he made everything himself, he cleaned and gutted the herring, wrap in wax paper and then newspaper. Lots of produce stores, Smiling Jack, Mr. Millers, I remember the creeking wooden floor as you step thru the door, the floor so old the slats all worn in the middle. Just a pickle store nothing else, with varies choices of pickles, sour pickles, half n half, large barrels at least 10 filled with pickles, all of course made on the premises. Stores that only sold dairy products, butter cut to order from a block of butter, eggs you took home in a bag, cottage cheese in a wooden box, purchased by the oz's. A bakery cakes and also kinishes, Charlotte Russe, white cake and whipped Cream and a cherry in the center, in a round paper cup, as you ate it, you pushed the bottom up, so you could eat the rest of the cake.
