Founded as an ABA team called the New Jersey Americans in 1967, the Nets wanted their name to include the words "New York" and to play in Manhattan. But the New York Knicks blocked their shot at a home court in the Big Apple. So, for the next 40-plus years, the Nets would play in Teaneck, New Jersey; Commack, New York; West Hempstead, New York; Uniondale, New York; Piscataway, New Jersey; East Rutherford, New Jersey; and Newark, New Jersey.
It wasn't until 2012 that the Nets finally settled in Brooklyn, New York. In 2019, the addition to the team's roster of Kyrie Irving (formerly of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics) and Kevin Durant (formerly of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Golden State Warriors) made the team a threat in the NBA's Eastern Conference for the first time since 2002 and 2003, when Jason Kidd led his team to the NBA Finals two years in row, losing to Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers the first year, and Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and rest of the San Antonio Spurs the second.
Before that, the Nets were a force to be reckoned with in the ABA. In 1972, led by the shooting of Rick Barry, the Nets made it to the ABA Finals, losing in six games to the Indiana Pacers who, like the Nets, would eventually join the NBA. The next year was a dismal "rebuilding" year, but in 1973, Julius Irving joined the Nets, propelling his teammates to their first championship. Dr. J. got the Nets to the finals again in 1976, helping them beat the Denver Nuggets in six games. This would be the last ABA Finals, as well as the last time the Nets won a championship in either league.
For collectors, vintage Nets jerseys and signed basketballs are desirable, but now that Durant is a member of the team, basketball cards bearing his photo are perhaps more in demand. Ironically, though, Durant's rookie card is the most sought, even though Durant is wearing the yellow-and-green uniform of the Seattle SuperSonics in that card's photo.
