In 1995, when the National Basketball Association expanded into Canada, two cities were selected, Toronto and Vancouver. Unfortunately, the Vancouver Grizzlies played just six seasons in what was then known as General Motors Place before being sold to an investor in the United States, who relocated the team to Memphis, Tennessee in 2001.
The basketball gods have been kinder to the Raptors. In the years before, during, and after the Grizzlies' move to Memphis, the Raptors were in the NBA playoffs, thanks in no small part to the play of Vince Carter, who the Raptors acquired as a rookie from the Golden State Warriors, which had drafted the University of North Carolina star in the first round.
Chris Bosh arrived in 2003 from Georgia Tech. Even though Bosh would become best known as a part of the triumvirate composed of Dwyane Wade and Lebron James, who propelled the Miami Heat to back-to-back NBA Championships in 2012 and 2013, Bosh began his career as a Raptor.
In 2009, a year before Bosh left the Raptors for the Heat in 2010, the team added DeMar DeRozan, a guard from USC, who was building to his mature period beginning in 2013 of averaging more than 20 points a night. In 2012, as DeRozan was just on the verge of really finding his shot, the Raptors brought in Kyle Lowry of the Houston Rockets. As of 2019, with Lowry in the lineup, the Raptors have finished first in their division five of the past six years.
Helping DeRozan and Lowry off the bench since 2016 has been Fred VanVleet, a guard who made a name for himself at Wichita State. That same year, forward Pascal Siakam arrived from New Mexico State and was quickly made a member of the starting lineup, although he also spent a fair amount of time in the D-League.
But then, in 2018, a trade was made that would seriously change the Raptors' fortunes. DeRozan and another player were sent to the San Antonio Spurs for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green. In a separate 2019 transaction, the team signed Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies. While Green and Gasol have been reliable assets to the Raptors, Leonard has been the game-changer, having the best and most productive season of his career. Indeed, during the 2018-2019 season, Leonard and the rest of the Raptors began to live up to their team's name, shredding defenses and gobbling up three-pointers with alarming regularity and speed.
