I have an old electric cigarette lighter that is all original. I would appreciate any feedback anyone can provide to me on it. For example what exactly it would be called, what it may be worth, and possibly the year it is from. I have yet to find anyone that has seen anything like this or knows what it is exactly. It could possibly be some sort of prototype. I am not sure.

It is about 11 1/2 inches tall, 5 inches across, and 5 inches deep. It has an original 110 volt non-polarized plug (both prongs for the plug are the same).

I have seen numerous Midland countertop jump spark cigar lighters that are of pretty much the exact same design and size made from wood. They apparently were common between 1909-1920. I believe this electric lighter would be from sometime between 1891-1921 based on the above information and the materials it is made from. Also electricity seems to have been first available around 1891 and the patent for a lighter of this type was made in 1921. So it would seem to be from this timeframe.

It is cast iron steel with a glass plate in the front and a tobacco advertisement behind it. When plugged in the front display lights up in beautiful bright detailed colors and the top has a heating element that can be removed to light a cigar/cigarette. The bottom front says the Neubert Schroeder Co. Distributors. When did the Neubert Schroeder Co. Distributors begin operations? This information should help in dating this as well.

Once again thank you so much to anyone that can provide any assistance to me on this item.

This is quite a unique piece. I have "never" seen anything like it. I thank you for the compliment about my "so called" knowledge lol but I'm not near as smart as you may think. About the only thing I have a "degree" in is coins and anything numismatics. Of course that's limited to U.S. coins as my knowledge in world coins is very limited. You have some really nice pieces and I plan to look further at them as I can find the time. I just found this site earlier this week and it's a dream site. "Just what the Dr. ordered". I just took a couple hundred pics of various items I have yesterday & today and will spend the next month or two posting them. After that, a couple hundred more pics and so and so on... Good luck in all of your hunts & finds in the tobacco realm. Take care, Kerry

The Neubert-Schroeder was in Toledo, Ohio and was owned by Henry G. Neubert, a Civil War veteran, and my paternal grandfather, Charles H. Schroeder. Henry Neubert was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 11, 1841 of German parents and died on July 9, 1900. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery located in Toledo, Ohio.
My grandfather, Charles H. Schroeder, was born on November 22, 1877 in Barnin, Germany, came to Toledo, Ohio with both parents as a baby, and died in Atlanta, Georgia on October 16, 1961. He is buried in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park in Toledo, Ohio.
It is my understanding that during the Great Depression of the 1920's that the company failed but my grandfather was always proud to say that he was able to pay all those to whom he owed money.

Richard I thank you so much for sharing what you did with me and the rest of the Collector's Weekly community. It is greatly appreciated. Your grandfather seems to have been an ambitious individual and hard worker. Traits that are admired and respected. You being a part of a family with such history is amazing. Always wishing you and your family nothing but the best my friend and once again thank you for sharing such historic and valuable information relating to a part of history of our great country. --Anthony aka electobacco
