    (199 items)

I thought I had posted this before but sure can't find it. Detail is incredible but really hard to photograph. Has a barque at quayside with sculpted buildings(2 levels), windmill, lighthouse, palms, dutch flag & more. Sailors had to wait until bottles were chipped around the mouth & couldn't get refilled anymore to get them for free. This has that feature. This bottle was made in CA but found in Italy. During the CA gold rush, crews would desert ship for the gold fields & ships were stranded until crews could be obtained by any means necessary. many ships were stranded for many months.
Did a search on the bottle a while back & it dates to the 1850's from San Francisco. In raised letters: ROSEDALE OK WHISKY & surrounding this in an oval SIEBE BROS. & PLACEMANN . S.F. SOLE AGENTS.
Wish I knew the value & who buys such things but all searches just find much more modern pieces while this is museum quality. The bottle even is a collector's item.
Can't decide on category so will list as electronics since staff will change it anyway.

Pops, I've been accused of being a bad influence on young & old alike.

Wow, nice find bb2!! I once found a fingernail in a beer in Vegas once, a worm in a bottle of tequila in TJ a few times, and a two-headed cobra in Thai liquor in Bangkok...but I wouldn't mind finding a ship! Love It =)

As you said photos are hard to see but from what I have seen of it great & the details you describe sound fantastic. I also like the little wooden box to the rear. I hope you had a good Christmas & happy new year.

Much better photos..well done!...Happy New Year my friend!...;-)

Zowie, if you are referring to the dark rectangular shape toward the back (dull-end of the bateau), I believe that is the rear of the teak stand I made for it. As you can tell, I'm an experienced sailor. You have the "pointed end" & then the "dull end" on most boats. Actually I do sail, but usually taken screaming & kicking. Joke.

I'm glad you enjoy it so much, I'm trying to get my man to take me into Cairns so we can go croc watching as I have never seen 1 in there natural habitat & it's not the same in the zoo. I'll get there

Hey blunderbuss2, That is a very cool ship in a bottle. I would also like to know what something like that would be worth! Maybe someone on here can give you some ideas of where to look. It is definitely a keeper. Talk to you later, Thrifty

I know Gypsy. This is the real honest antique thing! I feel honoured to own it! Was given to me by an Eng. girl who I helped move with my truck & could tell her husband didn't like it when she gave it to me. Later she told me he picked it up in Italy. We are all real old friends but still a bit guilty about accepting it & the idea of offering to give it back has hung in my mind but I have successfully fought off the urge. I've only found a few auction sites that have offered such a quality original item & they seem to sell for $1,2K & up. There are just too many modern replicas out there to find a serious site. Don't really need the money & wouldn't sell it for $1K. Rather give it to our musee. The greed of auctions is such that if it sold for $2k I would probably only get about $1.2K after shipping etc.. Musee probably the best bet & take a tax exemption. Problem there is I don't pay taxes so there is no benefit here. I could take it to the States & let my sister get a tax exemption but your Homeland Gestapo would probably break it like they have other things of mine. Honestly, I'm at a loss!

COOL ship Lucas, neat "OLD" original
    16. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 11 years ago
Thanks Kerry. I feel like the chosen few. What I'm chosen for is the part I'm worried about! Given to me about 5 yrs ago & I still pause passing it in awe. I'm pleased that there are some others that can truly appreciate such a work of art & skill. Can you imagine the time & skill? I've been bored, --- but not that bored. I get irritated when the hot water doesn't come on immediately!

Hi Blunderbuss, I'd love one of these, my father has one, not too dissimilar. This ones lovely, with all the rope work.
    18. Vintagefran Vintagefran, 11 years ago
No yours is nicer than dads, his is just the ship, not the waves and little house, its great!!
    19. Vintagefran Vintagefran, 11 years ago
Is it modelled on an actual ship do you know. It looks a little like a tea clipper..built for speed:)
    20. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 11 years ago
Vintage, I have no idea. Your reply brought the thing to my girlfriend's attention & so now will probably have to put it in a safe deposit box. Taught her how to shoot several yrs. ago. She's German. What was I thinking!? Guns in the hands of a Kraut! Had to hide the ammo. Probably the ship was a copy of a real boat but have no way of knowing. You are the 1st to suggest tea clipper but think you are probably right. All sorts of ships were engaged I taking people to the gold fields & crews deserted.

Beautiful ....would look good on my mantel.....but I suspect it looks great on yours...damn nice
    22. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 11 years ago
Just how badly would you like to see it on your mantle? LOL
    23. Vintagefran Vintagefran, 11 years ago
Taken me a month but just seen your comment blunderbuss. lol, 'Safety deposit box', guns! What you got there, its a ship in a bottle, cool though!
    24. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 11 years ago
Hey Marine53 & Vintagefran, we don't have mantles here because we don't need fireplaces. Guess I just Will it to our museum since I can't find a site for true antique ships in bottles & even then, I can understand where it would be hard for anybody to comprehend the true value of it. Actually, I don't think it's true artistry would be appreciated by many people visiting museums. I'm just honoured to own such a piece & love it when people admire it as well. Thanks for your appreciation.

Pleasure blunderbuss, i love it & think these can be amazing! I'm in awe of the craftsmanship involved in making these.

Scott, you must be bored if you are digging around in the CW morgue. I'll say thanks for the artisan who created it. The age pits in the glass also make it doubly hard to photograph.
    28. scottvez scottvez, 4 years ago
Not me-- someone else pulled it up and I hadn't seen it before.

      scott
