Bretby Art Pottery Bowl (England), ca. 1920's

Bowl (or perhaps flower pot?) with an irresistible (in my opinion!) mottled multi-tone glaze, manufactured at Bretby Art Pottery in Britain in the 1920's or maybe a little later. Inside, it is dark brown.

Founded by H. Tooth and V. Ault in 1883, Bretby Pottery produced vases, bowls, jugs, umbrella stands and other items for daily use, as well as decorative pieces, using a wide range of coloured glazes (although many other techniques, such as cloisonné and lustre, were also used). Tooth's son succeeded him (Ault had left in 1887) around the time of WWI and ran the place until 1933. After WWII the pottery became known as Tooth and Co. Ltd. Bretby Art Pottery. It closed in 1990.

Size: Height: 10 cm; diameter 19.5 cm. The bowl carries the Bretby mark: the name 'Bretby' below a rising sun. The early pieces have an imprinted 'England' as well, whereas 'Made in England' (as here) was used after ca. 1900. Finally, the number 1644D.
