    Nippon Slag Lamp
Only marking is on inner rod: impressed "NIPPON"
    8 curved glass panels
Never seen a similar base...decorated with phoenix birds...maybe dragons around upper edge
    Approx. 25 inches high

Some of the broken metal pieces have been kept for repair.

So pretty! I wonder if this can be dated by the nippon marking much like ceramics can...? If so, it would be 1891-1921, but I'm not sure...hope someone can help :)

Thank you, Zowie...the elephant leg table was brought back to Toronto from a Far East trip by the well-known Trethewey family...probably late 1920's or early 30's...

The shade and the base are likely a "Marriage" and where put together because they looked OK. That's done a lot. No slag glass shade from that era, would come with a Nippon marked base. I have about 200 of these lamps of my own, and fix have fixed about another 500 or more.. and sold at least that many. I love fixing them, to see what they looked like in their prime.

Foot note: Keep the metals pieces (I assume is filigree) in a safe place. It can be put back or recast and inserted, which adds to the value of the piece. Its a nice shade.

This lamp has been in the same family since 1915...always looked like this.
And the Nippon name is not on the base or marked like the Nippon pottery.
The word is engraved into the metal rod inside the base. All capital letters .
I think it is s Japanese import made to compete with the American slag lamps.

Howdy folks...I know this is an older post but I have a interesting add to the drama. Well it is kind of drama. I have come across ANOTHER lamp like the in the photos above. It has a slightly different shade but the base is the same. Slag is the same but the design is slightly different. On the bottom of the main body it is stamped 'MADEINNIPPON" So maybe these shades did come with the base back in the day.
