This is the 1959 Firebird III Experimental as seen during my visit in 2009.
    The description sign read:
The third vehicle on GM's trilogy of gas turbine-powered concept cars was the Firebird III. The cars styling was highlighted by seven short wings / tail fins and a double-bubble canopy. Powered by a third generation gas turbine - more powerful, yet a fraction of the size of its predecessors - this concept car also had an auxiliary 10hp engine to run its many power accessories. Most remarkable, the Firebird III boasted the world's first "drive-by-wire" system. Steering, throttle and brake functions were all controlled by an aircraft-like joystick.

A greater description can be found here:

    Thanks for looking,
    Dave

It's the ultimate car with fins. I thought we were all supposed to be driving around in bubble top cars now.

What a great concept. Put solar panels on it and it'd work a dream, somewhere with sun of course.

I remember seeing the cool experimental "future cars" in promo displays every few years and finding it hard to believe anything that awesome would ever actually be built. Now I see cars like the 2015 Corvette, the Tesla, BMWs, Lamborghinis, etc, etc and see that we can actually buy cars better than the dream cars of old. Life is amazing for us old folks!

Cool! This post is 4yrs ago, but funny I was just at the GM heritage center. But this car was not there. Very cool place for GM and old car people like me.( I prefer Mopars though)

iggy, I don't remember the number of cars they have, but we were told they rotate them regularly because the showroom is not big enough to display them all at one time.
