Can anyone tell me any info on this quart size, purple tinted mason jar? Can't find any info on it anywhere. It says "model mason". Photos show side and bottom, and it has a zinc lid. thanks! Maria

Red Book for Jars, by Doug LeyBourne, is the way to go. If the rim at top of jar is very rough, it's likely ground and therefore pretty old (pre-1920.) Go to Worthpoint and look it up, also e-bay's Sold Listings.
Manganese in the glass turned it purple when the sun's radiation hit it-- this even happens underground. Manganese usually as no longer added after 1920, but in some cases it is still added. It used to actually help make glass more clear, interestingly.
By the way, my guess is around 1910. Very nice-looking piece.
This is an early machine made jar. It has a lot of manganese in the glass and will turn quite purple. It was made circa 1900's - 1910 by Model Glass Works in Summitville Indiana.
