After yesterdays jewelry haul it's back to art glass today. I really was not sure about this 10 1/2" piece at all with it's very fluid simple shape and smokey grey color. What intrigued me most was that it was signed so that always indicates to me that it's a quality piece. I couldn't read the signature except for the 14594 A. Some long name and a small initial. About an hour of online searching and one name kept popping up "Holmegaard". I looked at it again and now knowing what to look for I could see that the engraved letters were indeed "Holmegaard" along with Per Lutkin's monogram. The catalog numbers were used after 1962 instead of the dates. Score again ! A Danish modern classic in perfect condition for two dollars including furniture protectors ! -Mike-
Per Lutken and Holmegaard
Per Lutken (1916-1998) was the unsurpassed master of Danish glass design and one of Holmegaard's most advanced glass blowers. He worked at the Holmegaard Glass Factory for 5 decades, from 1942 until his death in 1998. Known for his craftsmanship and perfectionism, he was an inspiring figure at the Holmegaard Factory.
Per introduced his "Selandia Series" bowl in 1957 and it has since become a Danish modern classic
In 1963 Holmegaard transitioned to numbering their pieces rather than date them.
You will always know that signature now!
Well done Mike - it's a classic.
Thanks Karen :)...signatures on glass are just as bad as paintings. Once you know what they're suppose to say it's like oh yeah now I see it !
Compliments and thanks for this interesting post.
Thank you Kivatinitz and you're welcome...it's always fun to learn something new :)
Hello mike
You remember I have one with similarities , unfortunately it's not sign.
Very great find .
Alan
Thanks Alan :)...While researching this piece. I saw a few on Ebay that where actually copies by Ikea. The bottoms have a ground concave pontil as the major difference from the true Holmegaard pieces which are always polished and marked. Either signed or labeled depending on the year they were made. This bowl was also reissued a few years ago in two sizes but in only blue or clear.
Very very nice!!!
Thanks Sean......Scandy art glass is your forte so I knew you would like this :)
I love the shape Mike!
Thank you Rick :)... Yes, Danish biomorphic at it's finest.
