With the bowtie - I think maybe an office job like bookkeeper or shipping clerk.

His forearms are very muscular, but his neck and trapezoids are not; my guess would be a job involving repetitive motion. Maybe a sailor on a working ship.
I would disagree with both the boxer and conductor options because of the attire and face are not of those trades. A conducter hat and uniform would be polished and also that hat is not a conductor's hat. A boxer's nose is not pretty!

but not a boxer. Way to pretty and a straight nose.

Very intriguing / curious photo! i think that the clues are the hat, the vest, funny bow-tie, and the rolled up sleeves. i'd guess something like shipping clerk, shop-cleaner, or maybe a shoe-shine boy? he's hiding his hands which could be because they are stained. i think he did some behind-the-scenes job, because he doesn't have a particularly indicative uniform which was customary amongst people who are in the public eye. Keep us posted!

Neat image-- handsome guy with a great pose!

Is it an ambrotype or tin?

Since there is no readily apparent tools of trade or specific indicator of his profession, I wouldn't consider it an occupational image.

Nonetheless, it is a desirable image and fine composition!
