    (62 items)

For czechglass5 here is one one of my Netsuke's of Ivory . Looks like a mouse some rabbits and a rat and a monkey ? On Piece Of Wooly mammoth Ivory with back left uncarved . It is 2 inches long
    ****************
The following is article on CW and link I used to copy it
    http://www.collectorsweekly.com/asian/netsuke

Netsuke originated in 17th century Japan as a means for men who wore robes known as kimono, which lacked pockets, to hold their belongings. Containers called "sagemono"—pouches, woven baskets, or beautifully crafted boxes called "inro"—were attached to the robes' sashes with cords and fasteners known as netsuke.

These ornaments, often made of ivory or coral, were not merely utilitarian devices, however, as they were often beautifully carved and decorated. In recent years, they have become exceedingly popular among collectors.

The themes depicted on netsuke, only a few inches in size, are endless, though they are often focused on Japanese history and mythology—from depictions of warriors to animals. There are dozens of styles of netsuke, such as kataborinesuke, which is sculptural netsuke, and mennetsuke, which is mask netsuke.

These miniature sculptures are still made today. Fine antique netsuke can be identified by its intricate design and use of pricey materials such as ivory (which was not illegal in the 17th through 19th centuries), jade, or precious stones. Cheaper netsuke is carved out of wood or bone

Best colour I've seen on CW for mammoth.

It's just a cat ands rats. But I think it's just a carving, not Netsuke. There is nothing to attach it to the belt. No holes, I mean.

"...men suspended their tobacco pouches, pipes, purses, writing implements, and other items of daily use on a silk cord passed behind their obi (sash). These hanging objects are called sagemono. The netsuke was attached to the other end of the cord preventing the cord from slipping through the obi. A sliding bead (ojime) was strung on the cord between the netsuke and the sagemono to allow the opening and closing of the sagemono."

It's a super piece, though! Here's info on the Netsuke holes:

Thank you Celine , Yes I did know how they were worn :-) But appreciate your insight . The Art Gallery had it with the Nestuke's as one of them . So as I am not sure exactly how it was attached I believe it is a Nestuke. If it is a carving then beautiful too .

Hi Manikin, what a fantastic, & cute, netsuke. Made of Mammoth ivory too, cool. My son loves Japanese culture and is just starting to collect netsuke, it'll be a long time, if ever, that he'll have something as desirable as this I'm sure. Ty for showing it and the informative post.
