Hello,
I was going crazy looking for papers for my income taxes this morning and came across this wonderful piece. I've had it for some time, but it found a hiding place shortly after it came into the house and has been lost to me.
It's an Eskimo carved stone figure of a man, just over 8" inches high and quite heavy. He suffered a little bit of damage before he came into my life, but the repair is very solid, and there are no missing pieces. The damage may have occurred while it was being carved,.....anyway, it's beautiful.
It does have a signature, but it's difficult to make out, and it's numbered.
I'm posting it tonight because I can't find one of my cats and it's making me restless. She's somewhere in the house, but like the stone man, has hidden herself very well. I shouldn't worry, but,......
In the day, with some magnification, I'll attempt to make out the signature and number and add it to this post.
Thanks for being out there,
Goodnight all,
Tony.
It looks like a G C A and an E-915 on the bottom :^)
Budek, Those number remind the number from Database of Native American Stone Carving artist, definitely some area to look, i have several piece similar post here, found the artist online, good luck.
Regards
Alan

and Thank you bill & Alan for the helpful comments!!
I'll let you know if I identify the artist by the initials, Thanks again.
Tony.
p.s., I did find the kitty, she'd hidden in a closet, one that I'd checked even! Now she's asleep on my bed, soon to be prancing all over me as I try to sleep.:)
Thanks for the look and love, antiquerose!, much appreciated!
You're welcome, good luck! :^)
Looks like your Dsc Number is E 915 to me. Not sure if this will help you:
These numbers were broken down into several parts,. The "E" for Inuit living east of Gjoa Haven and "W" for those in the west. Then this would be followed by a one or two digit number. That indicated the area the person was from. The last set of numbers after that - would identify the individual maker. Theses dscs were used in the Northwest Territories (which, then included present-day Nunavut) from 1941 until 1978...
Gjoa Haven is a hamlet in Nunavut, above the Arctic Circle, located in the Kitikmeot Region, 1,056 km northeast of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. It is the only settlement on King William Island
Now this may help you, it may NOT.......as I am not a professional on these things myself but have a few carving myself. So I am just throwing this out there...........which may be wrong, but at least I admit it. It still may be a direction. Never close the mind to suggestions in the collecting world. I rather be open-minded, than CLOSED minded...
~ ~ "" Also Rub some white Talc powder over it to highlight the letters, and repost us another picture. ~ ~
Dear Antiquerose, Thanks for sharing so much, you're a great help. I always try to keep an open mind, excellent advice!
I rubbed talc into the signature and wow!, brilliant idea.
It definitely looks like " E -91564 ". The initials above are more difficult to make out. My guess is that they're " C E A ", but I may be wrong.
I look forward to learning more about these carvings, ( I have a few others :)
Best wishes for a Happy Easter week-end!, and Thanks again, Tony.
Hi Tony here's the link to Katilvik.com for the artist of your sculpture. The symbols are Inuit letters for his first name, although rather crude. The numbers are the disc number for artist Levi Amidlak. If you contact Christa Ouimet at Waddington's auction gallery she will give you an appraisal. She did one for me a few years ago that I posted.

@Budek - Thanks so much for the wonderful comment to me. Glad YOUR a collector that keeps an open mind!! That is one of the best asset to have as a collector........
WOW, that is so right!! The talc really brought out the other numbers. That is a perfect example of how well that works. I could not see any see anything other than what looked like E915. So a Perfect example of a little magical trick. Now with the other letters that is much more helpful.
MIKELV85 -- Posted wonderful information that is so useful!! Way to go MIKE and Thumbs up to you for your knowledgeable and info on this post!! Waddingtons is Canadian, and I had met with some of them a few years ago when they came here.
~ ~ Good Luck, and Keep us posted on what other info you get!!
Mike, you're wonderful! Antiquerose had the brilliant idea about wiping the bottom with talc, and provided a lot of other very helpful information, and you nailed the attribution,....Thank you both so much!!! and thanks for the link, I look forward to exploring that.
Everyone on collectors weekly has been so good, I'm sorry that I don't contribute much myself. Hopefully, one day, I'll be able to shed light on someone else's mystery.
Thanks again,
Goodnight and Happy Easter/Passover to all,
Tony.
