Rode my trusty Honda 250cc over to Frankfort, KY today to see museums. They have 3 & a CW fort. The middle star on the Confederate "battle flag" is for KY. First is the familiar Gatling Gun, then a volley gun that fired all the barrels at once & was used for things like defending bridges. I've had all three of the last guns in firing order. Top is a paratrooper model of the M1 carbine. middle is a Reising .45 smg I they were junk. I had the paratrooper model with the short barrel that left the inside of your bicep ober the muzzle when you cocked it with the thumb actuator in the forearm. Not good ! Made by H&R. Then the M3 "grease gun", which is fun to walk cans down the road because of it's slow rate of fire.
Have more to come including the Confederate Williams rapid fire 1 pdr. cannon.

Ah a Civil War fort. I was thinking Collectors Weekly fort.
.45 seems like a good caliber for an SMG especially with ball ammo but for some reason 9mm is more popular.

Fort, on the 8th day, God created 9 m/m. Don't know how much experience you have had carrying large amounts of ammo, but the weight diff. between .45 & 9 m/m adds up fast. Going over to 9 m/m was good.

What has been your favourite to shoot ? Haven't had a chance to fire a submachine gun.

I agree with you bb2. I own weapons calibrated in both 45 cal. and 9 m/m. I know that the 45 has considerable more stopping power, but the 9m/m. should not be sold short.
In most cases, it will do the job of stopping an assailant with one shot, and if it doesn't, you can always pull the trigger again. The 9 m/m. ammo is lighter, .... loads more into the clip, .... and is cheaper to practice with. It is an ideal home and protection caliber. This is based solely on personal protection applications. Millitatily speaking, ... the 45 cal. is the way to go.

The Gatling Gun would have to be fun so long as your behind it, talk about a game changer.

Caper, I'm no expert & my experience is mostly with the 11-12 smgs that I have owned and got good with. You can control your shots much better with a slow rpm and 650 rpm the fastest I would ever want without the 3 rd. burst selector. Recent years have shown a constant increase up to 1,200 rpm & that cannot be kept on target by the average shooter. Mags. empty way too fast & that means stopping to replace them & carrying a lot more weight & bulk. Rather have a grenade. The 3 rd mode is a way of slowing down ammo consumption & I like it. Many newer ones fire from a closed bolt which makes the 1st rd. accurate & went more erratic after that. The open bolt usually makes the 1st rd. a bit erratic because of the bolt having to run forward before firing, but air can circulate thru the barrel between bursts for cooling. Many combinations have been tried since the MP-18 Bergmann came out during WWII. Lot of it is personal preference & individuals in special ops. are sometimes allowed to chose their favourite. I have more experience with open bolt & the answer to your question is: "Swedish K" & the British Sterling smg. Both being 9 m/m.

The debate continues! .45 vs. 9mm. I can see 9mm being much more practical with an SMG but for home defense with a handgun give me a .45 any day. If you can't get the job done with two or three shots then you need the 9mm so you can "spray and pray". Swedish K, Sterling(have a non firing movie quality replica) both excellent pieces of machinery, but don't forget the Sten. Recently had the opportunity to run an M3, a Sten, a Thompson and an MP 5. Have to wholeheartedly agree with the slower rate of fire from the M3, Sten, and Tommy gun. MUCH easier to stay on target and sooo much fun! Wish I could afford to go Class III.

Hey Nick. Where can you fire a MP5 around here. The Gendarme who was working on checking out one of theirs for us to shoot got transferred to Martinique (his home). You still owe me a beer ! LOL ! Maybe next weekend.
    13. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 8 years ago
Oh, Nick. If you have followed me for awhile, you know I had a Sten MkII. Actually two in the past 4-5 yrs. They don't stop for anything but if you need sights on a smg, those are crap.

In Jamaica, they had a "Go Slow" instead of strikes. Problem is, nobody knows when a business or Gov't. has a Go Slow unless it was put in the paper ! True.

Battle, they started with studying the patent on the Gatling. History repeating itself.
