I'm afraid this was a tough item to photograph but it is there. What was also tough was fitting it in my car. It actually fit better than I thought even though I had to fold down the front passenger seat. The owner of the antique store (who knows me by name, means I buy too much stuff) let me see if I could fit it in my car before I bought it. Success thus I bought it.
First photo it is in my car. I may have been able to get one a foot longer if they had one. Second photo is by my front door. It is close to one story tall.
The last two photos show the unusual shape of the shovel. It looks to be a scoop. My guess it is fr scooping out dirt from a deep but narrow hole.
If anyone for certain what this is they will get Mystery Solved points.

That's the longest shovel handle I've ever seen! Maybe it was custom made for a really tall person:)

I see these around here (Lancaster County, PA) frequently at farm sales. We call them "honey dippers" and they were used to clean out outhouses.

It is certainly better than a short handled shovel. Any of you guys ever have a boss put you to work with a short handled shovel? Means he didn't like you.

Thank you very much ho2cultcha. It seems to have two uses both involving cleaning out a hole.

The long handle makes me think the cleaning drains suggestions are probably on the right track.

Thank you very much elanski. The scale is tipped a bit that way.

I bought one just like this one last year from a guy who is the second owner of a historic home in Trussville alabama. It came with the house when he bought it and he was told that it was used to dig the water well that was on the property which would've been in the late 1800's

Thank you very much Mike Man. Sounds like a very plausible use for this.

Check out this article I found about long shovels.

Thank you very much bzampini. I believe it is something like that. GThis one is probably for removing the dirt from the hole as the blade is curved.
