This necklace is pretty amazing. It belongs to a friend of mine that she won as a lot on auction. I couldn't believe my eyes when she pulled it out to show me.
From what we found, it appears to be a prayer box necklace from the Middle East. Maybe Turkey. We just don't know for sure and wonder if anyone here knows??? If it is a prayer box, it has been sealed. I was hoping someone would recognize the coins and be able to tell us when, where from and so on. Some of the coins are all but worn down too, so I'm pretty sure it's maybe from the 1800's but just dont know.
There are no markings, assay or otherwise that I can find. The last photo is of the opposite side. I hope you can see it clearly enough so my friend and I can learn more about it! I haven't tested it but can say it is silver.

Hi Phil. I don't remember anything like this in the 70's but that only testifies...right?! LOL I actually think it's much older tho. Hopefully someone here knows just what it is! It's very cool. The middle coin has the date 1327 in Eastern Arabic system, roughly corresponding to 1909. That's as far as my Arabic goes. Does place it in the Muslim world, possibly Egypt or Iran. Also possible the coins are not all from a single country.
All coins belong to Ottoman Empire but it was a vast area at the time.
Armenian silversmiths who worked in Van area of Turkey were famous for niello technique but they were much better.

IVAN49! I am thrilled that you know this info too. UGH! The Ottoman era, I know what you mean by vast for sure. But you have given me the tools I need to pinpoint it down. And I could not remember that word/technique for the life of me! Niello. I also remember Agram explaining that technique in detail too. Phil, FYI, I was on the right track with the age! I saw one very similar that lacked the top coin and the chain and they stated 1800's. Not that that is a definite, but it made me glad to see it!
Given that the most legible coin is from 1909, while all the others are quite worn down, think you can date this fairly accurately. :)

I actually thought more 1950's modeled after some similar medal bars given and worn after the 2nd WW. Nice middle eastern flair, great find.
