Why bother with rope-lights when you can use tape-lights (I shan't name the brand)? I should think that they're an excellent enhancement for any glassware collection.
From my place of work I decided to buy some tape-lights since they were on sale, there was an 11% mail-in rebate on everything, and I got a 10% discount when swiping my badge (payroll deduction). While I do wish their adhesive backing was stronger, as it doesn't want to stick well to the wood, I was most pleased (after some drops of glue) with their effect upon mounting them.
My cell-phone pictures make the lighting look almost purple, but in all actuality it's a nearly pure white as wrought from each three-bulb (primary colours) panel spaced throughout. Interestingly, though there are no enhancers in the pigments of the labels, the red colours really pop (in person) while these lights are on.
I picked LEDs because they are the most gentle bright lights on pigments. Regular tube lights and filament bulbs degrade the pigments and even the paper, and sun is the worst. Normally these bottles are closed up in a cabinet so as to preserve the antique labels, but now I can enjoy them every now and then for a couple of minutes. Previously, I could hardly see the labels when I opened the cabinet doors, but, now, I can see them most clearly. Better still, I can increase or decrease the intensity using the remote control-- and I can change the colour of the lights, though I will always stick to white.
I have them plugged in with my radio, but when I use them the radio struggles to produce sound, so there is also that draw-back. However, that's only a first-world problem, so it's not really of concern.

Try double sided tape - very tacky! Neat eh SpiritBear. I have some on the back of the t.v. - lovely glow after all the regular lights are off.

Gillian, thank you for the tip. I ended up using little dots of super- and tacky-glues.
I don't suppose anyone here remembers T.V. lamps for backlighting? This was back when tube T.V.s were still in use (like ours is, lol).

What a magnificent collection!!! (*drooling*) We use tape lights too for certain applications, they are indeed a neat invention, and very affordable.

Thank you, Anna. I don't buy much new stuff since I'm attending a university now, but I decided to splurge. For the display in the basement, I use a single 1930s light-fixture with 1920s shade. Big difference.
