This is a beguiling stone.
Many years ago I helped a friend clear out a great old house in Maine, the contents of which had been given to him.
This was the one thing that no one wanted. It had been a doorstop, and had captured my attention from the moment I stepped into the hall where it had resided,...........I've treasured it ever since.
It's heavier than a regular stone, I'm guessing that it has some metal content.
Any idea what the origin of it might be?
I wasn't sure what category fit best, hence "moonstone".

Dont think its a meteorite sometimes rocks are formed around organic material they eventually rot and leave depressions holes cavities I believe this is what you have

Well I will throw in my two cents. I to have what I thought was a really odd stone that had been hollowed out. After over 30 years of wondering and researching I used the appraisal service on the top of this page to find out. My stone came from New Hampshire which borders Maine. Another thing the two states have in common is the Abneaki Indian tribe. The appraisal service informed me that my stone was made by the Abenaki as an eating utensil. The report also said it is quite rare to find one of their stones in one piece. Many have been found but only a handful in one piece. Mine is worth a few hundred dollars but I won't be selling it. You might want to pursue finding out what you actually have. Regardless of what it may be it is unique and probably one of a kind, keep us informed if you learn more and thanks for sharing.
Thank You, fhrjr2, I have a few native american artifacts, 2 of them from the Pokanoket tribe of southern New England, if this is another I'd feel fortunate.

Budek It might be worth it to use the appraisal service at the top of the page for this item. The cost isn't terribly steep and the results of their research will put your curiosity to rest. I am about to use the service once again on an item I have been researching for years without finding any information. Good or bad I will post it when they send my appraisal in a couple days.

scottvez the guy does seem quite frustrated in his post. My experience with Barneby's was quite the opposite. I got a detailed price, history etc. I took one more step after getting their appraisal and I contacted the Abenaki Museum for input on my piece. Everything seems to fall in place just as they stated in their report. I felt the service was worth the $17 on the item. You may be right about certain things being beyond the scope of what they are able to provide. Had I gotten the treatment the fellow you posted got I would have been heard loud and clear. I find it difficult to believe they would allow a $17 deal to get them bad press but stranger things have happened I suppose.
Budek I got my appraisal back from Barneby's this morning, right on schedule. I will be posting it shortly. I had posted it on here a couple years ago seeking information without luck. After all the years I finally have an answer.
