Verein Deutscher Krieger Cleveland Silver Cross

“Verein Deutscher Krieger Cleveland” translates Association of German War Veterans of Cleveland. The earliest mention of this group that I could find was in the 1871-72 Cleveland city directory which lists their address at 2077 West 25th street which is in the South Western section of that city. The reverse is blank with a fineness mark of 950 which is commonly found on German medals of that era indicating that this cross was probably made in Germany. The cross is about 38 mm across.

Interesting and good speculation. Never seen or heard of another. Nothing to do with this, but I read that, because of shortages on the fronts, iron crosses were sometimes made in the field for presentation.

Thanks BB, regarding the Iron Crosses, I suppose anything is possible. I am a suspicious sort though and think people will say anything to sell a fantasy / fake.

Source is records and not a seller.

Thanks BB, Can you share the source with us? I am always ready to learn.

I constantly read & do research. If I tried to keep records, it would become a job & take all the fun away.

Interesting thought, I will have to keep my eyes open for such a source. I remember back it the 1970's when I bought boxes of IC's and other German medals from a US vet's estate who had liberated them from a ware house!

I have also read where German dagger makers made them after the way to sell to soldiers as souvenirs. Know the myth about threads that glow under a black light being fakes ? The Suisse started marketing synthetic threads in the 30's and it was commonly used in some E. European countries, and as those countries were taken over, synthetics were adapted by the makers of German things. Myth busted for things made later in the War.

Soval is the best known maker for making original quality post war daggers but at least they altered their makers mark. Didn't know about the patches since I don't mess with them that much.
