Old German carved wooden bread tray

Going through some of my late father’s stuff I found this old German (1920‘s) carved wooden bread tray. Since he was trained as a baker he had to go through an apprenticeship as was the normal way back then so it was not surprising that he would have had such and item. The tray is inscribed “Erfahrung ist mehr als Meister-lehr” which translates roughly as “Experience is (worth) more than a master’s degree.” I never realized that he had such a rebellious streak in him but again that would not be surprising considering the slave-like treatment he endured during his apprenticeship to a master baker in 1920’s Germany.
