Found in an old barn. Had a old rotten wood handle. No other writing but the patent that was posted.

      Any guesses on the patent date? I think I see JULY 10 _ _ _ _?
    4. lptools, 5 years ago
Hello, bobby725. I tried July 30, 1907 , (which is a Tuesday) , but no luck. I am not sure when Patent Issue dates started to fall on a Tuesday, a wild guess would be after 1850 , when they started having equally spaced dates, one week apart. Btw, the hole , just under the curved piece, makes me think something was attached there. Regards, Lou

Sorry have posted this earlier. Been tied up on another project. The date on it as far as we can tell is July 10th 1807. That is the best the group at work I've showed it to can come up with

I posted a tool yesterday which I thought looked similar to this although there are some differences.

One of the guys I work with figured it out. They showed it to an older farmer that knew what it was. Barbwire/fence stretcher.

Does anyone know exactly how it works?
    9. Onedtent, 5 years ago
To answer Irishcollector: The hinge acts as a cam and grips the wire. The curved part of the tool is pressed against the fence post and the long handle (missing in this example but would normally be fitted into the socket of the tool) is braced against the fulcrum of the hinge/short arm/post and thereby tightens the fencing wire. Hope this makes sense!

It took a while to visualize it but I think I have it now. Thank you.

I have one identical to it with a two foot wooden handle that still has some bark on it.
