This piece is actually by FTG, Fukuoka Tokoshu Garasu, before they named themselves Multi Glass. So maybe 1960s?
It's a cute piece, a lovely little penguin sitting on an iceberg. The penguin is made from blue and purple glass covered with the shaped clear outer.
She is sitting on a ball of clear glass that has been roughly ground with facets, as rough ice would be. Inside the clear ball is yellow glass with a fine layer of brown then a fine layer of green. The clear case has a layer of controlled bubbles close to the coloured centre.
So much work in the base considering the ground outer obscures most views of the beautiful interior.
The base has a hole in it from where it was blown as a ball. The hole is effectively useless I think, too small for a pen, unsuitable for foliage. Any other ideas?
The whole measures 19cm and is weighty.

Regarding the hole: is that it at the area of the penguin’s “feet”? If so, perhaps it’s a hole in the ice for the penquin’s foray into the deep in search of fish to eat.

Amazing penguin on iceberg piece I just love it!! Besides the gorgeous frosted yellow base, I totally adore that magnificent swirl colored penguin what a beauty

A wonderful penguin! She's so sleek- her shape is really sweet, plump and realistic looking(I can see her waddling around on the ice!) I also think, like Watchsearcher that the hole is a decoration too- how else is she supposed to look under the ice and check for the fish? Or Orca whales?! :)

Love this. Note that the penguin is staring up, so will be looking at anything placed in the hole. What if the hole is meant to hold a single small flower and the penguin is staring up in wonder/confusion about something so out of place for a bird that lives in icy surroundings? Assuming the hole is deep enough to support the stem of a small flower.

I think the hole is meant to be seen. The bubbles getting smaller toward the bottom of the hole gives the illusion of depth, like finally reaching the water at the bottom of the ice.

I think it’s mannerism of penguins to point their beaks skyward.

Scoot, thanks so much for commenting and loving my penguin.

Apostata it's a well made piece, some nice technique in it. FTG have a long history of great glass makers. Nice comment, thanks.
