It measures 6 inches long and 2 3/4 inches wide
Thanks! Too large for a snuff box. Deciphering the engravings would be "enlightening". Game piece storage? Deities floating around? Lounging by a pool?
Looks Dutch. Trying to decipher. Let`s take some time.
"Een Trouw Hart Is een Kroon der Weerelt"
In Dutch it means :
"A Faithful Heart Is a Crown of the world"
More likely a wedding gift, token of love.
Thank you for the translation!
this must be old using the the word der = conjunction of van and de en and weerelt with 2 ee and and a- t instead of wereld

Tobacco boxes have been collected for almost 300 years. Yet little has been published about these fascinating objects, which played an important role in social interaction in the Netherlands. The owner's status could be read from the material a box was made of. Copper, in particular, was commonplace when stopping a pipe that was first raised to fashion by the wealthy and later became literally popular with the entire population. With a precious silver box, embossed, beautifully engraved or combined with other materials, you could show that you were socially successful. Skippers, captains, merchants, estate owners commissioned the most beautiful combination. Bible and mythology, the history of the country or of your city, but also your personal situation could be the inspiration for artistic translation
