My boss just gave me this large robot that he had in his closet for many years!! I’m very happy! It shows how to put battery in but I don’t want to force anything or break it. I wonder if it still talks?!! Is anyone familiar with putting C battery in?? Thank you!

      Robbiekai, Cool. :-)

      Robby the Robot. <3

      *snip*

In 1984, the Japanese company Masudaya made two versions of this iconic robot- a 16 inch and 24 inch version. They varied somewhat in the level of detail and were constructed from vinyl and clear plastic components. In 1997, Masudaya reissued both versions of the robot with updated packaging but little change in the overall design, consruction etc.

      *snip*

They also made the vehicle for the 24" version, and cast metal version of Robby in the nineties.

      The instructions:

      https://www.amazon.com/Original-Masudaya-Instruction-Forbidden-Planet/dp/B00J3D3VSS

It looks like you open Robby at the 'shoulder' by twisting him ninety degrees clockwise.

However, even when it was brand-new, it was advised to use care in handling, because some parts were brittle, and now it's potentially close to forty years old.

Should you decide to proceed, C batteries are still widely available. I see them in my local hardware store. Just pay attention to the polarity signs (+ and -) on both the batteries and the body of the toy.

      Good luck. :-)

BTW, in case there are old batteries still inside it, you'll want to remove those and clean up any leakage from them:

I got him open, unfortunately, a mess in there, must have had battery in there that disintegrated and wires not connected. Good try!! He’s still adorable, I love him!!

Robbiekai, I was afraid of that, akaline batteries being what they are. :-(

It still might be salvageable after a cleanup and rewiring, but that latter would require a certain amount of know how.

If you love it even inoperable, it's still a win. :-)

It reminds me of a wonderful toy I bought in 1979 and it was not made before but in 79 for the first time. Still being sold as being vintage. I sold mine to an antique store ripoff guy and got a good return. A few years later I saw the same dealer had the same toy with ugly alterations. What goes round comes around. Yours is same story but built in 84 !~
