      Hi, Hadden77. :-)

CW user billretirecoll was on the right track when he linked that reproduction coin.

I'm not a coin expert, but at a glance, I suspect that is what you have. The big reason? Real gold doesn't oxidize easily:

      https://medium.com/@allwastematters/4-reasons-why-gold-is-an-amazing-metal-and-how-to-recognize-fake-gold-bebb5be41f5f

      https://coinsite.com/is-it-a-1851-20-dollar-baldwin-and-co-20-dollar-gold-piece-or-a-copy/

Here's what a real 1851 Baldwin twenty dollar coin looks like:

      https://coins.ha.com/itm/territorial-gold/1851-20-baldwin-twenty-dollar-xf45-pcgs-k-5-high-r7/a/1204-5438.s

Baldwin also made ten and five dollar coins:

      https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/category/territorial/california-gold/baldwin-company-1850-1851/1736

I doubt that there was any intention of fraud in the making of your coin, but there have been some less-than-honest attempts to reproduce Baldwin coins:

      Hadden77, You're welcome. :-)

Yeah, someone tried to scratch out the copy marking on the obverse of the coin making it worth less than nothing
    8. keramikos, 3 years ago
flashlarue, Wow, I didn't even notice that.

I just looked at the overall oxidation, and decided that it couldn't possibly be gold.

So the die-maker was honest enough to want to make it clear that rounds struck using it were replicas, but at some point, somebody apparently wanted to pass off this particular round as as a real Baldwin?

Yes the best way to remember is all that oxidizes is not Gold
