billretirecoll, That Whiting & Davis mesh bag with the original box and tag is an incredible find.

Unless they used the same tag for decades, it seems like it could be as old as 1940s vintage:

billretirecoll, You're welcome and thank you. :-)

I'm kind of fascinated to think that somebody bought that Whiting & Davis metal mesh handbag and never used it.

Were they saving it for 'nice' and a nice enough occasion never presented itself? Did they die before they could use it? Was it a gift and they didn't really care for it? Inquiring minds want to know.

You know I'm a fool for information and those articles had some tasty tidbits like Jane Russell wearing a W&D metal mesh dress that purportedly weighed twenty one pounds.

She and Robert Mitchum got along well and he used to kid her by calling her "Iron John":

I'm just following up on the metal mesh evening gown that Whiting & Davis made for Jane Russell to wear in 1952's "Macao" and its purported weight:

      https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044863/mediaviewer/rm2103866880/

I decided to suck it up and ask the creators of the content (Whiting & Davis) and here is the response:

      *snip*

The "snip" was taken from the studio press release that the photo appeared in.

Seventy years later, what we can confirm is that the Whiting & Davis Brass Flat Spider Mesh fabric used to make that dress weighs .481 lbs. per square foot in natural brass and when you add the gold plating to it, it goes over 1/2 lb. per square foot.

      *snip*

That was kind of what I had suspected, based on the idea that it probably would have taken about 3 yards of 60 inch wide fabric (45 square feet) to make that dress, e.g.:

      https://www.thevintagepatternshop.com/shop/vintage-sewing-patterns/1970s-sewing-patterns/dresses-all-types-1970s-sewing-patterns/1971-vintage-vogue-sewing-pattern-b36-dress-1514-by-teal-traina/

      https://www.whitinganddavis.com/pages/cfSpiderMesh.cfm

Of course, not every inch of that yardage would have been used to make the dress, so there might have been a bit of studio hype involved. };-)
