This is another machine my mom has tucked away. Again I know nothing about it. We're cleaning out storage spaces that haven't been touched for 15 years or better.

      myrandam82, Woo hoo!

What you have is the much coveted Singer Featherweight.

Traveling quilters (yeah, that's a thing) love it because of its relatively light weight.

Moreover, it's a movie star. It puts in an appearance in 1979's "Kramer vs. Kramer." In the scene where Dustin Hoffman's character decides that his wife isn't coming back, and starts purging the apartment of her left behind belongings, a Featherweight is seen on a closet shelf.

And hey, you found the serial number, despite it being tucked away on the undercarriage. :-)

Serial number AH576960 was one of a block of 30,000 consecutive serial numbers ([AH]550921 through [AH]580920) allotted to the Elizabethport factory, and all were intended to be stamped into the chassis of model 221-1 sewing machine heads.

WWII was over, so yours probably rolled off of the assembly line some time between the allotment date of its block (April 20 1948), and the allotment date of the next block of serial numbers intended for model 221-1 sewing machine heads (June 18 1948):

      *snip*

      AH 550921 580920 221-1 30000 April 20 1948

      AH 640321 670320 221-1 30000 June 18 1948

      *snip*

This was the very first (and only) electric machine my Granny owned after she “upgraded” from her treadle machine. I wish I owned it now….it a great little machine!
