    Pottery Piggy Bank

My sister was out searching for items for our etsy store and came across this pottery piggy bank. She bought it for me knowing I have a growing collection of piggy banks.

Appears to be a one of piece, made by unknown person. It has some spotted dripped glaze pattern that makes it look like a dirty pig.

Not sure how, but I now have over a dozen different banks made from different materials. These materials include brass, metal, chrome, wicker, leather, glass, art glass, and ceramic to name a few..

cool! i think this type was based on ones made by california potter Robert Maxwell. I have one that looks just like this one. it's somewhere amongst my posts...

Thanks Ho2C...it does look similar to yours but the shape and feet are definitely different. It's a pretty popular shape for banks..

Is this where they got the saying
      "Put a Cork in It?"
    7. dav2no1 dav2no1, 2 years ago
Suff..actually no one is certain where "put a cork in it" originated..possibly the trenches of WWI.

Another feasible option is, it derived from "put a sock in it"
"the phrase to put a sock in it referred to early gramophones that had no volume control. It is said that people who were annoyed by the high decibels produced by these machines would suggest that the person operating the player put a sock, rolled up into a ball, inside the horn producing the sound."

Looks very similar to banks made by John Pettus Johnny Ceramics

Dave, like you I don't really know where 'put a cork into it' came from -- but you are absolutely SPOT ON about the 'put a sock in it' with that phrase's origin regarding Gramophones... :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

I remember buying something very similar at a pottery shed in Rhode Island in the late '70s. They also made an elephant bank of the same material. Haven't seen one since.
