I have actually forgotten where I had bought this vase that is now generally accepted as being of 'Franz Welz' manufacture in the northern border town of Hrob ..... these days in the Czech Republic. This vase probably dates to the late 1920’s.

Hrob is located about 7 kilometres west of Teplice a major town for collectors of both glass and pottery manufacture in the late 19th and early twentieth centuries. Between Hrob and Teplice lies yet another important town of glass manufacture : Kostany.

Klostergrab, Kosten and Teplitz were their German names.

If you travel a bit further north of Hrob (c.12 km) you would be in Saxony, Germany and in between were the Erzegebirge mountains ... the Ore mountains that provided brown coal to fuel the fires of Bohemian industry from the 1860’s onwards in what was to become northern Czechoslovakia. In response to rising fuel costs Alois Welz (1829-1895) built a new glassworks in the far northern border town of Hrob. The new factory employed about 30 workers there in the early 1860's. Alois's son Franz Welz (1850-1924) inherited the factory and two nearby lignite mines in 1873. He in turn handed over the expanded business to his two sons Josef and Franz Alois in 1909. They continued production at the glassworks well into the 1930’s and after its closure it give way to extensive surface lignite mining on the site.

This is a super vase, Kevin!
You know, this post is bringing a vague memory of seeing a vase like this long ago in the big antiques centre that used to be down on South Dowling Street. Used to pop in there a fair bit back in my art student days of the early to late 1990s. If it wasn't this exact one, then it was something very much like it. I have a feeling it was in a showcase with a bunch of Art Deco/Tango glass items, which I used to drool over. I know I've seen this decor before in person...& I found it very interesting, too, but I wasn't at the point of fully "understanding" it yet, if you get what I mean!
