This cast iron turtle trinket box is 7.5" long x 4" wide. It has a faint "JAPAN" stamped in ink on the bottom. There are no other markings. Since the mark is in ink, it may not have been made for export but may have been exported as an afterthought. It is fairly heavy, probably around 2 lbs. It is pretty heavily painted, enough so that it obscures some of the detail of the mold work. The eyes and the mouth are well detailed but hard to see due to the paint, for instance. At least, I assume it is paint, very durable finish as not much wear is apparent. The only details really lacking are on the bottoms of the feet.
I have been looking for a nice turtle trinket box and this is a fairly well done, detailed example. Maker not known.
Cool..one of my best thrift shop finds was a metal turtle body then the next week I found a wood Tuttle shell box. I married them for a super cool piece. My sister has it now.
Ah, serendipity! Gotta love it! Thanks for the comments and story!
