How do you know its a hood ornament? Could be part of a sculpture thar was secured to a base?
The screw mounts on the bottom match the standard layout for hood ornaments.
Its quite new and usually when Repros like this one come online there is no info.
But if it is a reproduction I should be able to find the original source shouldn't I? What indicates that it is new?
Fabulous & unusual hood ornament, great find Phil
I do have all the books on mascots and there have been many, I also know the authors quite well, as I collect rare mascots. As for Mangbetu, there are a number of mascots of them but NONE remotely looking like yours. AS for "online", you should know that nothing posted online stays online !! If a piece like yours is posted for sale, then when it is sold, the seller takes if offline or the site like ebay will. I know quite a bit about buying online also, almost nothing of 7-10 years ago is still there unless its a collector posting site, and those have changed substantially also. This piece of yours is not modelled at all like an old mascot would be !~
Thanks Jenni, this is not my post !!
Obviously this is not the original 1926 François Basin depiction of Femme Mangbetu. I appreciate your experience but I find your dismissal of this item as "a new repro" to not be helpful in any way. My interest is finding out more about this piece. And I find your attitude to be unnecessarily dour. There is NO need to include ALL CAPS in your RESPONSE. Are you trying to suck the joy and fun out of discovering the history of items? Because that's what you are doing.
Let me state first that it is not my intention to take away the fun out of discovering the history of items.
I would like to ask you if this hood ornament looks like it has been placed on a car for a long time in the past? The sculpture itself looks new. Could this be a restored one?
It is possible to order custom made ornaments in every size and form you want. If this one is, then there may have been only one made and you will therefore not be able to find much information.
I was not meaning to dismiss this as I quite like the piece and the form gets its message through loud and clear. A lot of pieces like this were made and still being made that are not seen often. Even the professional mascot collectors and authors are seeing pieces regularly they have never seen before. Nice find.
