I picked this up at a swap meet over the weekend. Made primarily of cast iron, It is a knife sharpener/polisher that , I believe, was made in the 1920's or 1930's.
They were known to be made as early as the 1700's. By the mid 20th century, when stainless steel blades came into popularity, these relics of the past were no longer needed. Their need was for carbon steel blades that rusted if not attended to occasionally.
If you look at the last photo, you can see the hard brushes that cleaned and polished, and, also sharpened the carbon steel knife blade.

Cool find! I love the old tools. Folks back in the day knew how to maintain their goods and stuff lasted forever... sure wish we would go back to manufacturing reliable, made to last tools and products... but then, there is not enough profit if they can't turn over the 'waste' and make more $$$$$. So, it's china junk now days. Sad, but true.
BTW, our chain saw just burned up after 30 years, now we have to get a new one and I'm sure the cost is high and the quality is less. We had a Stihl, so hoping the next one is the last one we buy.
Thanks for sharing your cool finds.

Thank you Blueyecon, for the nice comments. I couldn't agree with you more about the junk that is marketed today. Chinese junk is more than a name for a boat, it describes the quality of the items that we live by these days. In my area, warehouses are going up every day, and I believe that it is probably filled with scrappy, worthless, and cheaply made items from a country that wants to destroy us with cheap scrap and deadly viruses.
