New series: British Cub Scout caps.
Alternative title to the series – Why do things always seem to get worse over time?
This is an example of the first cap designed for the boys in Cubs, boys aged 8 to 11. It is based on the classic British School boy caps. This one would be 1950s/60s. It is a well made woollen cap and has a proper lining. It has the red wolf logo on the front. Cubs were called Wolf Cubs back then, rather than cub scouts. It also has two stars to the front of the cap. These were merit stars earned for completing a series of different tests and experiences. Baden-Powell, the organisation’s founder, said the two stars represent the gleaming eyes of a wolf cub. Wolf cubs are born blind, correspondingly, new Cubs wouldn’t have the stars on their cap. By the time a Cub was ready to go on to Scouts his eyes would be fully open to the world around him and he would have two stars showing his development.
Pictures 3 and 4 show 2 booklets detailing all the tests for achieving the stars.
Great piece of history here !~
Great new series and excellent point about things getting worse all the time. Boy Scouts have a cheesy baseball cap with the plastic strap in the back now.
