In 1967 there was an overhaul of UK Scouting and a number of changes were made across the organisation. One was to rename the Wolf Cubs to Cub Scouts, usually just shortened to Cubs. This was due to the organisation's intention to place less emphasis on the Jungle Book theme that ran quite strongly in the program for younger boys. The Wolf Cub logo was replaced on the cap with the gold fleur-de-lys badge of the Scouts and the two merit stars were moved from the cap and onto the shoulder as patches, with the analogy of the cub's eyes also lost.
The new caps were made from a cheaper material and had a basic lining, so they could remain affordable for parents.
In 1989 all headwear was dropped from the uniform requirements for both Cubs and Scouts and the traditional cap was no longer available from the scout shop. Although it could still be worn optionally, if packs wanted to.
