Collectabl…

Haven't posted for a while so I thought I would post this strange looking Brooch. It has the makers initials SS the Edinburgh assay marks and the date letter x. Nothing seems to make sense the makers mark does not tie in with the date marks and I am still not sure if it is a paddle/ oar or maybe something to do with sport. I am sure someone will know. Neil
The "paddle" might be to stir the sugar in a liquid in a tall glass.
The beautiful carpet could be Persian or Arabian. It looks as if it is a prayer carpet, the top would have been pointed toward Mecca. Hanging it is a good idea. Make sure it is not against an outside wall, unless your walls are well insulatted. You don't want it to get moldy. Install sturdy hooks which won't rip out of wall. Get someone to help you. It's hard work! If in the end, you decide to leave it on the floor, NEVER vacuum it, it will remove the nap. Take a soft damp sponge and gently wipe it. If you have pets, definitely hang it on the wall! Hope this helps!
Collectables59, I'm having a bit of trouble making sense of this item.
In the first and third pictures, it does indeed look like some kind of brooch or pin. Is it that in the second picture you opened the mechanism, and just photographed the part with the hallmarks?
Being that it's of Edinburgh origins, perhaps it's some kind of kilt or kilt-associated accessory?
What are the dimensions?
I suppose it could be a kilt pin as it is about 3 1/2" long. Picture 2 was only to illustrate the hallmarks.
Thank you for all the loves. Neil
