Older cane/walking stick collection. I like the older rustic and carved ones. Haven’t done a lot of research on them but I suspect one of them is an Irish black thorn cane, which I will attach a link with a little interesting story on them. Also, there are a couple of bamboo, one that is sturdy, and that could be used for support when walking the other, which is quite spindly I suspect is a carnival barkers cane..the ones they would point at you and tell you to step right up and try your luck! There is one that is curved in a swirled pattern with a mushroom top and another dark one that looks like a heavy bamboo painted with a mushroom top. I have another striped looking one that I haven’t located on line yet. It’s a lovely wood but I’m not sure what it is. Also, there are a couple of old carved and curved gnarly, looking wood ones , they are very rustic and are excellent props for my witch’s costume at Halloween…
The Blackthorn bush is found throughout Ireland and the British Isles. It has been prized for centuries as a material for premium walking sticks. The original Blackthorn sticks were 2 to 4 foot long Irish shillelaghs (the national weapon of rural Ireland). In expert hands the shillelagh was so fearsome that during the final occupation of Ireland, the English outlawed it. To get around the law, the Irish turned the shillelagh into a 3-foot walking stick. The English didn't want to appear unreasonable by outlawing walking sticks too, so the Irish kept their modified shillelaghs and the world gained a beautiful and functional walking stick known simply as the Blackthorn.
Wonderful collection and great history. By now it shouldn't be a surprise because I collect everything..but I like me some canes too!
I have one that's similar to the one on the right..but mine is a dog..

This is the first time that I've seen this post Laurabelle, and Your Cane/walking stick Collection is Great, I could have paired up, shape, color, and type, to Yours. with the ones that I gave away, at the Northern California Renaissance on opening day September 16, 2023! Thanks for Showing Your Collection, it brought a smile to my face! Bill :^)
Thanks so much, Dave, vetraio,Jscotto and Bill… It’s so nice to hear from like minds and have people other than myself that can get some enjoyment out of my little collections. I’ve always felt I was doing my part to preserve a little bit of history and not just hoarding lol I guess it takes a collector to understand a collector:)
