    Vintage Garden Tools

I was recently watching the movie Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman, George Kennedy and Dennis Hopper from 1967. There's several scenes where they are trimming weeds along side the road as part of the chain gang. This reminded me that I have similar vintage tools in the tool room.

The first is a grass dethatcher and the second is a weed cutter....some may call this a grass whip. I remember playing around using it as a kid. You better be careful or you can loose some toes!

Do these take straight gasoline or do you have to mix in oil?
Heck.... I don't even see a fuel tank or pull rope.

dav2no1, I still marvel at that movie. What a great ensemble piece.

Yah, I don't think my parents would have allowed their children within a country mile of those gardening tools.

Stuff...That is sad..I mean his popcorn was so much more popular..lol. actually see they make dog food and fake oreos now too.

He did lots of great movies..since I'm a pool player, I loved "Color of Money"..but my favorite movie is "The Hustler"..I hope they re-master it on 4K Bluray! .."I'm going to beat that fat man - with that curly hair and those diamond rings and that carnation."

We called that tool in the movie a “sling blade”…I have a couple of them now and they get used every now and then.
When I was a child, we had a reel-mower (manual powered, of course) and a sling blade to maintain our front yard. My sister and I provided the muscle.
I a sling blade gets sharpened every now and then, it’s really effective.
I have 2 of the dethachers….they work pretty well at getting out the weeds.
I must be getting older than I feel since I have so much experience with these old tools, and I still love them. :^D

      Watchsearcher, Sling blade!

The movie crowds out all other hits on the on a simple Google search for "sling blade." You have to add "tool" to see the gardening implement.

Curiously, wikipedia shows a different tool:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sling_blade

However, there are also multitudinous hits for vendors of tools that show modern versions of the tool in this post.

      Here's a demo:

Yikes, I think these tools could only be descibed well by the people who get life with no chance of parole, they are rather fascinating !~

Keramikos, I looked at the video you referenced….Yep! The guy used it just like it’s supposed to be used….it’s just as effective on the back-swing as it is going forward. It’s a great tool for cutting tall weeds.
And regarding the Wikipedia info…the tool pictured is in my shed right now…I’ve never known it’s true name. Maybe now I can remember to call it the “brush cutter” instead of “that blade on the long handle” - it’s another tool that is very handy, especially for whacking down long blackberry canes without getting tangled in their thorns.

PhilDMorris, >lol< I’ve been using these things since childhood, know all about using them, I’m now 71 years old and still using them so I think that make me fall into the category of “life without parole”! Thanks for giving me a little chuckle.

I used this recently to cut some dandelions that popped up after a quick rain shower. Still works good..easy to use. Doesn't scar the lawn like my electric Milwaukee weedeater.

Very cool!! It would take a very long time to dethatch my lawn with the dethatcher:) Cool Hand Luke if one of my favorite movies of all time!
