    1930s Velveeta Cheese Box

    Approximately 9" x 3" x 2 1/2"

This is a cool old Velveeta cheese box. I have done a lot of research and believe it dates to the 1930s.

THE FIRST TO CUT THE CHEESE
Although cheese making goes back a long ways..Archeologists have discovered cheese making as far back as 5500 BCE.

The first recorded use of a box was in 1890. An engineer named M. Ridel created a wooden box which was used to carry cheese. The box allowed for the cheese to be shipped near and far.

    IT'S NOT EASY BEING CHEESY
In 1918 a Swiss immigrant Emil Frey waa working at the "Monroe Cheese Company" and invented Velveeta cheese.

Cheese is produced in a wheel. The factory noticed that many wheels were broken or misshapen, wasting valuable product. Not wanting to let this waste fall by the wayside, the company shipped the broken bits back to Monroe, where Frey was charged with figuring out a way to make something valuable from the scraps.

    NOW THE BIG CHEESE
With the new cheese process, they separated from the Monroe Cheese Company. The Velveeta Cheese Company became incorporated in 1923. They carried two main flavors, American and Swiss cheese.

    OH SO KRAFTY
In 1927 The Velveeta Cheese Company was purchased by Kraft Inc. Foods Inc.

Even today there is some controversy with Kraft claiming they invented Velveeta and only used Frey's name.

Neet item. I'll bet the cheese is still good if there is any in the box.
